Why Do I Get Dark Circles and Puffy Bags Under My Eyes? How to Remove Them

Dark circles and bags under the eyes are two separate problems. You could have one or both of these problems at any given time. If you’re like most people, you’d like to know what causes them. Understanding the causes can help you figure out what to do about them.
Causes of Bags
Illness, Health Problems and Allergies:
Your eyes will often become puffy when you are ill. In the condition mononucleosis, for example, the eyes become puffy and swollen during the early stages of the infection but most of the swelling is above, not below the eyes…

Health problems that are accompanied by the symptom include hypothyroidism (low thyroid). In this condition, the whole face may become puffy. Other health problems that can cause the problem include kidney problems, food poisoning, Chagas Disease and obstructions in the blood vessels that carry fluids to and from the face.
These conditions are all accompanied by other symptoms. It is unlikely that they are the underlying cause if your only symptom is puffy bags under your eyes.
Allergies can cause the symptom by making your eyes watery or itchy. The salt in tears pulls water into the skin beneath the eyes, causing puffiness. Rubbing itchy eyes to relieve the itch will trigger irritation that leads to increased fluid in the areas.
Crying, Tear Gland Problems and Toxins:
Crying can cause the problem for the same reason that watery eyes do. There is salt in the tears that cause fluid retention in the area.
Tear glands sometimes become clogged or leak fluids out into the area beneath the eyes. Toxins such as those in alcohol and tobacco can cause swelling around the eyes.
Common Causes:
The most common causes of bags under the eyes are fatigue, oversleeping, too much salt in the diet and the aging process. The skin around the eyes is thinner than anywhere else on the body. The skin becomes even thinner with age because of a decreased production of skin cells that accompanies the aging process. But don’t worry; there are solutions for the problem regardless of the cause.
Causes of Dark Circles
Illnesses, Medications, Health Problems and Allergies:
Many illnesses and health cause a “smudged” or bruised look under the eyes. The symptom is sometimes due to liver disease or anemia, a lack of iron in the diet. The allergy commonly described as hay fever can also cause this symptom.
Medications that dilate the blood vessels can cause this side effect. The problem is related to the tiny blood vessels beneath the skin, which as mentioned above, is thinner beneath the eyes than elsewhere.
Common Causes:
The most common causes are fatigue, heredity, leaky blood vessels and the aging process. Some people inherit a trait that causes increased production of the pigment melanin beneath or around the eyes. Others inherit a trait that is similar to varicose veins that causes some blood vessels to be visible through the skin.
Leaky blood vessels can be due to poor nutrition or to the aging process. Aging can also cause a decrease in the amount of collagen in the skin, which makes the skin more transparent. Blood vessels that were not visible during a person’s youth can be seen.
